When should you take down your Christmas tree?
Updated | By Lee-Roy Wright
You may want it to stay up all year, but Christmas cannot last forever...
Unfortunately, there comes a time when the tree must come down, but when?
Breakfast Show hosts Martin Bester and Tumi Morake are on a mission to figure out when the right time to take it down is.
We all may have our own set of rules as to when the tree of festive cheer should be packed away, but some superstitions say that if you don't take down your tree before a certain point, it could bring bad luck.
Christmas tree 'specialists' seem to believe that the Twelfth Night is considered to be either on January 5 or January 6, and that is when your tree should be taken down. Superstition also has it that tree spirits living in the greenery during winter (Northern Hemisphere) must be released back outside once Christmas is over.
We asked our listeners on Facebook for their opinions as to when the right time to take down the tree is:
So many mixed opinions! We guess it's safe to say that it can come down whenever you feel it's the right time to do so.
After all, there's nothing wrong with keeping that festive cheer alive for a little longer.
Martin and Tumi were joined by two top-achieving Matric students, who both managed to obtain NINE distinctions each in their Matric 2017 examinations. We challenged them to take down our Christmas tree, because, well, we can!
