Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Want to start planning your 2025 holidays already? Here are all the public and school holidays.
Planning ahead is one of the best ways to set yourself up for a successful and less stressful year.
But planning isn't just about organising everything you need or want to accomplish – it's also about carving out time to rest, recharge, and reconnect.
In all the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to overlook the importance of rest, quality time with family, and some alone time.
Luckily, you can easily do that by knowing exactly when to take leave to fully take advantage of South African public holidays.
Let's start by looking at all the school and public holidays for 2025.
The Department of Basic Education gazetted the 2025 school calendar on January 31 , 2023, so you can start planning now.
Here's how to get 24 days off by only using 12 days of your leave (you might want to take your calendar out for this):
By taking leave from 11–17 April and 22 April–2 May, you can enjoy a total of 24 days off while only using 12 leave days.
Here's how it works:
Public holidays:
- 18 April (Good Friday)
- 21 April 21 (Family Day)
- 28 April (Freedom Day)
- May 1 (Workers Day)
Leave days to take:
- 11, 14, 15, 16, 17 April
- 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30 April
- 2 May
Total days off (including weekends): 24
