Waking up early is often linked to increased productivity, mental clarity, and getting a head start on the day.

With that in mind, you'd think South Africans must be one of the most productive nations, given that we’re reportedly among the world's earliest risers!

According to World of Statistics, citing the World Population Review, the average wake-up time in South Africa is 6:24 am.

That's earlier than in countries like the United States, Japan, Germany, and Australia, putting us ahead of many other nations when it comes to starting the day.

Many South Africans claim this statistic isn't early enough, with some saying they rise even earlier – especially those who rely on public transport.

In major cities, where commuting can involve multiple taxis, buses, or even long walks, early mornings are often a necessity, not a choice.

Others attribute their early wake-up times to lifestyle choices, such as getting ahead on work, exercising, or tending to family responsibilities.

South Africa isn't alone in the early riser club. The study shows that we're joined by:

  • Colombia: 6:31 am

  • Costa Rica: 6:38 am

  • Indonesia: 6:55 am

  • Japan: 7:09 am
