Breakfast with Martin Bester goes vegan this January
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
South African musician Elandré has challenged the Breakfast with Martin Bester team to participate in Veganuary at the start of 2025.
Why not kick off your 2025 with a good old challenge?
This January, Breakfast with Martin Bester is taking How Hard Can It Be to new heights with a month-long challenge.
At the end of 2024, musician Elandré challenged Martin Bester, Philicity Reeken, and Xola Ntshinga to participate in the annual Veganuary challenge.
Veganuary is a UK-based nonprofit organisation that encourages people to try a vegan diet for the month of January. Founded in 2014, the campaign has grown in popularity each year since then.
The Breakfast with Martin Bester team politely accepted the challenge, and for the rest of January 2025, they are only allowed to eat vegan.
Let's see if they can do it!
You can follow their journey throughout January by tuning in every weekday from 06:00 to 09:00. You can also check out Breakfast with Martin Bester on all social media platforms to follow the journey there.
To kick things off, Elandré got help from a local South African vegan restaurant, The Fussy Vegan, to prepare a vegan breakfast for the team.
Breakfast included a full "traditional breakfast" that was completely vegan, as well as a croissant and a breakfast burrito.
Day one seemed to go well, as the breakfast was a massive hit with Martin Bester and the rest of the team.
Anyone can take part in Veganuary
A vegan diet consists only of foods made from plants or those that don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients.
This includes fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, tofu, nuts and seeds, spices and herbs, vegan beverages, vegan junk food, and much more. Vegans do not eat foods that come from animals, including dairy products and eggs.
Even if you’re a meat lover, you can participate in Veganuary—whether as a personal challenge or as a way to experiment with new foods and flavours.
Who knows—challenging yourself could lead to a better understanding of veganism. It might also introduce you to new ways to enjoy meat-free meals every now and then.
Vegan vs vegetarian
Vegan
As mentioned above, vegans avoid all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, honey, and gelatin. Vegans may also abstain from using animal-derived products like leather.
Vegetarian
Vegetarians typically avoid meat, fish, shellfish, crustacea, and animal by-products but may still eat dairy and eggs. There are different types of vegetarians, including:
- Ovo-vegetarians: Eat eggs.
- Lacto-vegetarians: Eat dairy products.
- Lacto-ovo-vegetarians: Eat eggs and dairy products.
- Pescatarians: Eat fish and other seafood, and may also eat dairy and eggs.
