Companies might have to pay for the use of ‘Jerusalema’

The lockdown fun we had was short-lived for some, as news broke earlier this week regarding licensing fees.
The #JerusalemaChallenge was one of many things to bring some positivity to 2020.
President Cyril Ramaphosa even encouraged people to perform the challenge on Heritage Day.
President Ramaphosa, in one of his lockdown speeches, said this was to celebrate the diverse heritage of the nation.

“There can be no better way to celebrate South Africans than joining the global phenomenon that is spreading across the world, and that is the Jerusalema dance challenge….the Jerusalema song that I love so much. So I urge all of you to take up this challenge and show the world what we are capable of,” President Ramaphosa said.
However, Warner Music has issued several German institutions with bills for licensing fees after they used the song for "image promotion".
The record company is demanding compensation for the usage of the song.

Warner Germany said individuals will not be charged, but companies who used the song for promotional purposes would be held accountable.
