Eyewitness recalls man being run over and killed by bakkie

Sarah Britten spoke to 'Breakfast with Martin Bester' after witnessing the horrific incident in which a man was run over and killed by another man driving a bakkie.

A Zimbabwean man, Emmanuel Mahamba, was brutally murdered in an incident that has sent shockwaves across South Africa.
In a video widely shared on social media, Mahamba is seen sitting on the road when a Ford Ranger runs over him repeatedly. He died at the scene.
Please note: The video has been omitted from this article due to the severity of the visuals.

A woman, allegedly identified as Ntombi, said the father of her son, a Ugandan national, is currently on the run after brutally murdering her former boyfriend, Mahamba.
Eyewitness Sarah Britten recalled the moment she saw a man being run over and killed by the driver of a bakkie.
"When I first saw it, I was on my way home. I arrived on the scene after the video that’s now circulating online had already been taken. I got there at the end of the incident,” she said.
The man in the bakkie sped off just as she arrived, and that was also when she realised what had happened.
"My nine-year-old daughter was in the car. Luckily, she didn’t see anything," she added.
"I locked my car and ran up to the man, who was lying on 12th Avenue in Rivonia, to help. He was still alive.
I accidentally phoned my husband, and he called for help. The person who filmed the now-viral video also phoned emergency services.
I got there around 16:20. By 16:35, the ambulance had arrived, and the police came about 20 minutes later."

When Martin Bester asked if there was a good chance the perpetrator would be caught, Britten responded: "I heard the vehicle was found. The perpetrator is reportedly Ugandan, and it's possible that he has already skipped the country. I’m not optimistic," she said.
When asked if she had received counselling, she replied: "I write about it – that's how I process what happened.
"It took 10 days for this story to reach the public, and I hope the publicity will help get justice for Emmanuel.
"It happened on the 5th of April. It's only because of the video that this has sparked public outrage."
According to IOL, Johannesburg-based activist Moreboys Munetsi stepped in to assist Mahamba's family. Munetsi, a lawyer by profession, said he was providing legal support to the victim's loved ones.

"For now, I'm giving the family legal support. At the same time, we're encouraging the Zimbabwean community in Joburg to contribute towards the funeral costs," Munetsi told IOL.
"The contributions are coming from the Zimbabwean community. Emmanuel's body has already been repatriated for burial in Zimbabwe."
