"The Gauteng Panic Button is a testament to the progress made by the provincial government to create a safer environment for everyone in the province. By downloading and using this app, you can protect yourself and your loved ones in times of emergency,” Dhlamini said.

And it actually works…

We tried it out for ourselves, and so far, so good.

After a swift download and registration process using just a cellphone number and location services, we finally opened up the app.

While testing the new app, one of the Jacaranda FM staff members accidentally pressed the 'Medical Emergency' panic button.

In mere moments, they were called by a response team member to ensure everything was in order.

"I apologised to the man, saying that I pressed the button by accident," he said.

"He was so kind and understanding, but I was almost speechless at how quickly they responded. It was literally seconds."

The response team member also identified the employee's exact location and asked him if he was currently at the Jacaranda FM main office.

"In order to end the call, the man asked me for the last four digits of my cellphone number and that was it."
