Good Morning Angels: The best moments of 2023
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
We’re taking a look at some of the most beautiful moments of Good Morning Angels in 2023.
Since 2005, Good Morning Angels has strived to change the lives of people in need, and 2023 was no different.
Each Good Morning Angels is special and dear to our hearts, and throughout 2023, there were many stories that left Jacaranda FM and our listeners in tears.
We take a look at this year's Good Morning Angels:
A young boy gets the gift of hearing
The Foundation for Children with Hearing loss in SA exists to assist children like André van Zyl to receive the gift of hearing. To mark World Hearing Day this week, the Foundation will assist André and his family with the outstanding R70,000 needed to make his cochlear implant a reality! His procedure has already been booked and he will soon be able to hear again!
Good Morning Angels: Local flower seller Johannes Qambelisha gets a car
Johannes Qambelisha has been a constant feature just off the N1 on the Beyers Naudé off-ramp, where he has been selling flowers for the past 30 years.
A few of the regulars on the road had noticed that Johannes was absent for some time and enquired.
They found out that he had not been well and needed medical assistance. As the only breadwinner in his family, he could not take time off completely.
Stefan Zeelie, representing the Together We Bloom NPO, donated R20,000 towards a car for Johannes.
Barry Harmse from Motus Toyota Bryanston found the car for Johannes at R37,000 - serviced it, new tyres, Johannes Number Plates, and a new car radio!
Little Wanga is back after successful heart surgery
We met six-year-old Wanga and her dad, Takalani, in February this year.
She desperately needed surgery to mend a hole in her heart.
The Angels came to Wanga’s aid in the form of a group of private medical practitioners and suppliers co-ordinated by our friends at Operation Healing Hands.
Good Morning Angels and our generous listeners donated R300,000 to assist other children in need as well.
Wanga was one of the first children to receive her surgery.
Outsurance, through their Staff Helping SA Out fund, contributed R300,000 to enable Operation Healing Hands and their special Child Cardio Project, to assist another 10 children with their much-needed corrective heart surgeries!
Youth Day 2023: Creating Safe Spaces for the mental well-being of our children
To mark Youth Day 2023, Jacaranda FM focused on supporting school children with mental wellness and well-being.
That's why Jacaranda FM has partnered with Community Keepers, a Western Cape-based NPO, that specialises in creating these Safe Spaces.
- Community Keepers is currently active in 35 Western Cape schools, serving 32 000 learners - as well as their caregivers, families, and teachers.
- Community Keepers are gearing up to roll out their services in 20 Gauteng schools in Eersterust, Mamelodi East and West from 1 July 2023.
- This roll-out in Gauteng has been made possible by a Treasury Department Jobs Fund grant, as well as private funding, as all of the Community Keepers services are rendered pro-bono to low-income school communities.
- Community Keepers train unemployed youth and social workers in the communities where they work, to serve in these schools. Besides rendering a vital service, they are also creating around 60 new jobs, employing young mothers, and empowering school levers to earn a living while serving their community.
PS Fourie Primary School in Eersterust is the first school in Gauteng to receive its own Community Keepers Safe Space.
Assisting children with facial abnormalities this Mandela Day
This Mandela Day, Good Morning Angels partnered with Smile Foundation to help disadvantaged children living with facial abnormalities like facial paralysis, burns, cleft lips and palates to get an opportunity to smile.
Good Morning Angels Golf Day raises R4.2-million to Change Lives for Good
The Good Morning Angels Golf Day 2023 at Centurion Country Club was an amazing success. With the help, contribution, effort, and creativity of our participants and sponsors, we managed to raise over R4.2-million to change lives for good!
Helping SA radio veteran Bongani Nxumalo to work again
Bongani Nxumalo is no stranger to the South African and international entertainment industry.
Bongani has been active in several charity and upliftment projects throughout his career, but his life took a turn when he started losing his eyesight.
It has become so bad that he cannot read scripts anymore and therefore cannot drive or work as a radio, voice, and performing artist. Bongani has been unable to work and has become destitute.
The Good Morning Angels Fund will assisted with R100,000 towards Bongani's eye operations, to enable him to regain his eyesight and ability to work and provide for his family.
