Guinness World Record: 67 days in a barrel in Dullstroom
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Vernon Kruger has accepted a recent invitation by the
Guinness Book of World Records to break his
own record - Kruger has been up in the barrel for 57 days!
In 1997, then 29-year-old Vernon Kruger spent 67 days in a 500-litre wine barrel mounted onto a pole in the little town of Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, breaking the Guinness World Record. It has remained unshaken and unbeaten despite various worldwide attempts.
Now it is time to do it all again.
#BattleOfTheBarrel
The event will take place in Dullstroom, on the “Dullstroom Greens”, a park in the middle of the town on the main road. This is also the same location where the original record was placed.
Dullstroom Accommodation is acting as the event-coördinator and marketing team for Kruger. They will be facilitating the event planning and organising, together with a team of local volunteers who are willing to help. The Dullstroom Accommodation office is right across the road from the Greens.
The proposed start date for the event is 14 November 2019 and has a projected timeline of three months.
Vernon used to be a Dullstroom local when he set the first world record, but now lives with his family in Plettenberg Bay.
The event hopes to raise awareness for the town, attract both local as well as international interest, and add to Dullstroom’s rich history and cultural value to South Africa as a whole.
The Secret to Success
In order for Vernon to be successful in his endeavour, he will need support.
Vernon has a “ground crew” that will assist him daily, sending food up to the barrel with an old-school pulley system.
Various Dullstroom restaurants have pledged to sponsor meals and drinks.
Various local Accommodation venues have pledged to sponsor accommodation for his crew and other stakeholders where needed.
