Here's what groceries cost 30 years ago vs today

We don't need to tell you that life has become almost unbearably expensive, but just how much have prices increased over the years?
A Pick n Pay Hypermarket till slip from 34 years ago was recently shared on the community Facebook group, The Village, and it revealed the staggering increase in the price of groceries over the years.

According to the picture, which Times Live discovered first, some of these items have even reduced in package size, while the price has increased drastically.
This is usually referred to as "shrinkflation", reports Times Live.
"Shrinkflation" is when "manufacturers reduce pack sizes just enough to save on their input costs, but not enough that consumers will notice."

The list of 60 items on the till slips altogether cost a total of R146.77 on 29 May 1990, at the Pick n Pay Hypermarket in Ottery, Cape Town.
