How to find out if a car was in a crash before buying it
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) launched a new website to check whether a car has been in a crash.
The second-hand car market is booming, with many South Africans opting for pre-loved cars.
Unfortunately, certain problems can arise when purchasing second-hand cars that would not occur when purchasing a new vehicle.
One of these issues is not knowing whether the second-hand car has been in a crash and then repaired.

Luckily, the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has launched its new VIN-Lookup website, allowing consumers to check if a used car has been damaged and repaired using an online VIN-Lookup facility.
According to Times Live, the new website will be rolled out in different phases.
Phase 1: Vehicles classified as Code 3 (rebuilt), Code 3A (Spare parts only) and Code 4, Scrap/ permanently demolished cars.
Phase 2: We will consider the inclusion of written-off code 2 vehicles.

The VIN-Lookup facility will allow private buyers and car dealers to make informed decisions.
Access for members of the public will be accessible on www.vinlookupsa.co.za, though the VSD only applies to the estimated 30% of vehicles in the country that have been insured.
