The South African rugby titan will be making his return to the Vodacom Bulls after his contract with Leicester Tigers comes to an end following the current season.

According to The South African, Handré Pollard’s return to the Bulls was expected to come with a reduced paycheque due to salary caps and exchange rate challenges within South African rugby.

It was reported that Pollard earned around £650,000 (roughly R16 million) per season at Leicester.

Luckily for the Springbok fly-half, he won’t be taking a pay cut.

According to Rapport, Pollard has signed one of the biggest deals in South African rugby, with additional income expected from other sources.

In addition to receiving a top-up on his salary as a Player of National Interest, it’s reported that Bulls shareholders Johann Rupert, Patrice Motsepe, and Johan van Zyl also contributed financially to secure Pollard’s return.

His move back home also opens the door to commercial deals, which means his total earnings are expected to be close to what he made in England – around R16 million per season.

The South African Rugby Industry Collective Agreement (2024–2027) also provides insight into player earnings and the portion covered by the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

According to the agreement, Springbok match-day players will earn R118,197.93 per match, fully funded by SARU.

For non-playing Springbok squad members, the figure is R59,539 per week, while players in the training squad (released to their provinces) can expect R8,505.57 per day.

On returning to the Bulls, Pollard said: "I am really grateful for this opportunity. It’s something I don’t take for granted. Being able to come home after a great few years overseas – I'm beyond excited.

"I started my career at the Bulls, and those six years played a massive role in the person and player I am today. This team and franchise have always had a special place in my heart, and I can’t see myself anywhere else in South Africa."
