Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
If you're looking into studying any time soon, this one is for you.
For many South Africans, the obvious next step after completing their high school career is to find a suitable university to further their studies.
Many factors are considered when choosing one's tertiary education, with the cost of studying being one of the most prominent factors for many.
According to BusinessTech, the cost of annual tuition fees across significant fields of study, including commerce, arts, engineering, law, and medicine, varies and is usually influenced by different factors.

These include the accolades, global reputation, and perceived prestige the tertiary institutions hold in each field.
Based on the Center for World University Rankings 2024, a comparative analysis of the six most prominent public universities in South Africa in terms of tuition fees across the major fields was conducted.
Here are the estimated annual tuition fees across these fields:
The comparison shows that a degree from UCT, Wits, or Stellenbosch is often pricier than other institutions in South Africa.
As shown in the analysis, a Bachelor of Medicine remains the most expensive degree, while a Bachelor of Arts (BA) is, on average, the least expensive.

BusinessTech reports that although degrees may seem equal on paper, they may have different perceptions for employers based on the institution.
Another interesting fact is that these fees are still considerably lower than those of the most expensive private schools in South Africa.
"The most expensive boarding school's annual fees is nearly four times that of studying medicine at UCT."
