How much SA Paralympic athletes earn for winning medals
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The Paralympics 2024 is finally underway in Paris…
On Wednesday, 28 August, the 2024 Paralympic Games kicked off in Paris, just a few weeks after the Paris Olympics concluded in the city of love.
After a proud stint at the 33rd Summer Olympics, South Africans can yet again hold their heads high for para-athletes representing Team SA at this Paralympics.

According to BusinessTech, the 17th Summer Paralympic Games is set to be the biggest in history, with a record of 168 countries and 4,400 para-athletes competing.
Team SA has para-athletes representing the country across nine different sporting codes.
The athletes are placed into different events based on their mobility, coordination, absence of limbs, or visual impairment.
Just like the Paris 2024 athletes, the para-athletes will walk away with more than just a medal should they place on the podium in the different sporting events.
They will receive the same incentives for winning a medal as their Olympic counterparts.

Athletes who win gold will be awarded R400,000, with the coach receiving R100,000.
Silver medallists will earn R200,000 and R50,000, while the bronze medal payouts will be R75,000 and R25,000 for the athlete and coach, respectively.
Athletes who win medals in Boccia, a precision ball sport for neurological conditions related to cerebral palsy, will earn between R40,000 and R200,000 for a medal.
Boccia coaches will earn between R20,000 and R100,000 for a medal as well.
To recognise the unique nature of the Paralympics, guides for visually impaired athletes will also receive the same payouts as the coaches of those athletes who earn a medal.
