Former US president Donald Trump was rushed off stage during a campaign rally on Saturday after bullets went flying at the event, leaving the politician with a bloodied ear.

Video footage of the incident showed Trump talking to the crowd when he suddenly clutched his ear as the sound of a gun fire echoed through the crowd.

The FBI has now identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of nearby Bethel Park.

According to CNN, Crooks was about to reach a political milestone by being able to vote in the country's National Elections in November.

He had allegedly been showing potential interest in politics, having made a small political donation as a teenager and registering to vote just a week after turning 18.

During the attack, the 20-year-old killed one spectator and critically injured two others before being killed by the Secret Service.

The spectator killed in the shooting that targeted former president Donald Trump has been identified as Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter and father of two who died shielding his family from the gunshots.

Comperatore "died a real-life superhero", one of his daughters, Allyson, said in a Facebook post after the attempted assassination of Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

"He threw my mom and I to the ground... (and) shielded my body from the bullet that came at us," she continued.

She described her father as "the best dad a girl could ever ask for," someone always ready to help and quick to "make friends with anyone."
