According to BBC's Sky at Night Magazine, the smiley face was made up of an alignment of Venus, Saturn, and the crescent moon.

The moon's thin crescent formed the smile of the face, while Venus made the face's left eye, and Saturn made its right eye.

Sky at Night Magazine reported that this is such a rare sight, not just because it looked like a smiley face, but also because it’s uncommon for planets to appear close to the moon, something known as a conjunction.

Two or more planets close to the moon – like this "smiley face" – are known as a massing in astronomy.
