LOOK: Hole in Centurion sparks fears of new sinkhole

Centurion residents are concerned that yet another sinkhole is forming in the area.

A hole that has appeared on DF Malan Avenue in Lyttelton, Centurion, has raised alarms among local residents.

The hole first started forming on Tuesday, February 18, and has since grown significantly, prompting immediate action from Tshwane metro officials and a geologist.

Experts are currently assessing the formation to determine its size, extent, and whether it qualifies as a sinkhole.

"Further investigations are underway to establish if it is a sinkhole or a road subsidence."

Ward councillor Johan van Burren confirmed that barriers were installed around the site to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

"The area was secured with barriers yesterday afternoon," he said.

According to Pretoria Rekord, residents have expressed their concerns about the frequency of such occurrences.

"The increasing number of sinkholes in Centurion is troubling," said Nathaniel Scheepers.

The discovery has also sparked discussions online, with residents sharing photos and voicing their concerns across social media platforms.

Many worry about potential infrastructure damage and safety hazards should the hole expand or new ones develop.
