LOOK: Police raid unhygienic facility processing wors

Cape Town officials and police allegedly raided the unlicensed food-manufacturing operation in Mfuleni on Wednesday.

Cape Town police recently raided an unlicensed food-manufacturing facility in Mfuleni where wors was being processed in horrific conditions.

According to News24, the raid was part of an operation involving police Crime Intelligence, law enforcement, and health departments.

JP Smith, the City's mayoral committee member for safety and security, said that they responded after receiving a tip-off.

"Upon inspecting the premises they discovered sausage being processed and packaged in unsanitary conditions. The facility was processing and packaging sausages in unhygienic conditions, posing a significant health risk to consumers," he said. 

It has also been reported that there was suspected illegal activity at the facility.

The owner and employees were suspected of being in the country illegally.

"The premises [have] been declared a crime scene, and forensics experts are processing the contents and confiscating food samples for further testing. Everyone found on the premises will be detained," he said.

"Environmental health practitioners took meat samples from the premises for chemical analysis to test the levels and type of additives in the sausage," wrote The city's environmental and health service in an official statement.

Six people have been arrested in terms of the Immigration and Food Act.
