Luke Bell and his father, Mike, from the Western Cape, have made headlines worldwide for setting the Guinness World Record for creating the world's fastest drone.

The quadcopter drone, dubbed the Peregreen 2, can reach an average top speed of 480km/h.

Peregreen 2 was named after an earlier model, which reached a speed of 389km/h but was never officially recognised by Guinness World Records.

According to the Guinness World Records report, the drone is a 3D-printed carbon fibre, battery-operated and remote-controlled device.

The drone's official Guinness World Records title is the "fastest ground speed by a battery-powered remote-controlled (RC) quadcopter".

The father-son-duo had to fly the drone in two runs in opposite directions to demonstrate its ability to navigate tail or headwinds.

"The actual top speed measured by the drone during these two runs was 510km/h (317 mph), meaning it can travel 142 metres in a single second," the Guinness World Record reported.

Mike Bell was the architect who designed the incredible Mbombela Stadium in South Africa, which hosted four games at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

His son Luke is a content creator who often reviews drones and cameras on his YouTube and Instagram channels. He is also an ambassador for Sony.
