On Monday, Martin Bester cautioned drivers to stay vigilant when driving after he shared his experience with an attempted smash-and-grab.
It is no secret that crime rates in South Africa are at an all-time high, with violent crimes plaguing the streets of the country.
According to the SAPS annual crime report, there were 22,702 carjacking incidents in the 2022/23 reporting period.
The report also revealed that there were 37,461 incidents of theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles and 87,173 incidents of robbery out or from motor vehicles.

But it is only when these stories hit close to home that we really understand the severity of it and how it impacts those around us.
On Monday, Jacaranda FM’s own Martin Bester shared an incident where he was caught in an attempted smash-and-grab.
While on his way to Cape Town with his band, the award-winning radio host and singer was caught in traffic while driving from the airport.
Bester recalled the moment the hijackers ran up to the window shouting and attempting to rob him and his band members.
Fortunately, said Martin Bester, his guitarist Werner Bosman, who was driving, was extremely vigilant, ensuring that the car doors were locked and he didn’t stop too close to the car in front of them.

As the criminal attempted the smash-and-grab, Bosman managed to drive forward, scaring off the alleged robbers.
The radio host also believes that the men did not expect to see only men in the car and describes his drummer, Walla, who is “quite an imposing, tall gentleman”, as part of the reason they sped off.
Bester urged drivers to keep a safe distance from cars in front of them, lock their doors, and be as vigilant as possible when driving.
