We've said it once, and we'll say it again: school sports is not your opportunity to get rid of your anger.

Another embarrassing sight of children and parents engaging in a fistfight during a school rugby match has made its way to social media.

According to a statement by Kingswood College in the Eastern Cape, the brawl broke out after the conclusion of their 1st XV rugby fixture against Marlow Landbouskool.

In the video, several students can be seen going at each other as adults also start piling in on the commotion, with one of them even attempting to slap a learner.

“Horrible scenes at the end of the Kingswood College vs Marlow game at the Graeme Festival today," wrote Adrian Slabbert, an X user who shared the video.

Kingswood College shared the following statement:

"Many of you would have heard about or seen the unpleasant ending to our 1st XV rugby fixture against Marlow this weekend and I would like to make some observations related to this.

"Firstly, as we all know, sport plays a vital role in teaching our children valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, respect, and perseverance. Learning these skills is the true value of sport rather than a team’s win/loss ratio and Kingswood does not subscribe to a 'win at all costs' ethos.

"Sport has become such an emotive space for children, coaches and parents that we sometimes forget that the true purpose of sport at school is to build young men and women of character. We acknowledge that our learners will sometimes make mistakes in terms of their behaviour and when this happens the appropriate sanctions will be applied.

"Consequences to ones actions is a vital lesson for all to learn. We strive to ensure that our learners learn to: respect officials and opponents; focus on enjoyment and development of skills; learn to maintain perspective; and conduct themselves in a manner becoming of a Kingswoodian.

"Secondly, the conduct of those on the sidelines is equally instrumental in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of our young athletes. At this particular game, the behaviour of some adults, not associated with Kingswood, on the side of the field was completely unacceptable and took the focus off the positives of the game. We are privileged to have a community of parents, guardians, and OK’s who are supportive and enthusiastic. It is essential to remember that our actions during games can have a profound impact on our children.

"They look to us for cues on how to react in both victory and defeat, how to respect officials and opponents, and how to exhibit sportsmanship.

"In light of these points, we kindly ask all parents and guardians to:

  • Encourage your children, regardless of the outcome.
  • Show respect for all participants, including officials, players, and coaches.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating sportsmanship and positivity.
  • Support coaches’ decisions and efforts to foster team spirit and player development.

"We cannot control the actions of others but what we can do is control our own actions. Together, we can ensure that sport remains a positive, enriching, and enjoyable part of our children’s lives. Let us cheer, encourage, and support in a manner that uplifts everyone involved.

"Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Here’s to a season filled with joy, learning, and sportsmanship."
