SA Michelin Star Chef rates Jacaranda FM’s birthday cake

Chef Thinus van der Westhuizen tried News Cast Editor Gerda de Sousa’s cake she baked for Jacaranda FM’s birthday.
On Thursday, Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to chef Thinus Van der Westhuizen - one of only five South Africans to be awarded a coveted Michelin Star.

As part of his visit, he tried Jacaranda FM’s birthday cake that News Cast Editor Gerda de Sousa baked for the team.
He also told Breakfast with Martin Bester that Jacaranda FM’s official dish should be malva pudding.
The 33-year-old works as the head chef at 99 Sushi Bar in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Pretoria-born chef, who went to Hoërskool Menlopark, said he has always had a love for cooking, especially Japanese food.

"Japanese food has always been a big love of mine," he said.
99 Sushi Bar specialises in Japanese cuisine.
It is one of the first establishments to be awarded a Michelin Star in a Middle Eastern country.

Van der Westhuizen told Breakfast with Martin Bester that although the award came as a surprise, he was incredibly thankful and proud.
"When I got the email I thought it was spam," the Michelin Star chef said.
