A recent report revealed the most used social media platforms in South Africa. Which social media platform is your favourite?

Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives.

Whether it's staying in contact with friends, finding new information, following your favourite celebrities, or, more recently, using it for work, the world is currently run on social media.

From the plethora of social media platforms, which are the most popular and which are seeing a decline in users?

The 2024 South African Social Media Landscape Report provides a snapshot of the country's biggest social media apps.

Based on their findings, Facebook remains the most popular platform amongst South Africans, with usage increasing from 56.7% in 2022 to 59.6% in 2023.

TikTok is the second most popular platform, rising from 30.6% in 2022 to 34.0% in 2023.

Twitter, or X, has seen a massive decline in users, going from 22.5% in 2022 to 18.8% in 2023.

Here are the most-used social media platforms in South Africa:

  1. Facebook (59.6%)
  2. TikTok (34.0%)
  3. Instagram (26.9%)
  4. Twitter/ X (18.8%)
  5. LinkedIn (12.2%)

The report, which was compiled by brand intelligence and media analysis company Ornico in partnership with tech market researchers World Wide Worx, gave an expansive look into the world of social media in South Africa.

Part of the report also looked at the favourite social media platforms among brands in South Africa.

Here’s the list of the most-used social media platforms by brands:

  1. Facebook (78%)
  2. LinkedIn (72%)
  3. Instagram (56%)
  4. X (Twitter) (51%)
  5. YouTube (51%)
  6. WhatsApp (49%)
  7. TikTok (33%)
