The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital need us again this Mandela Day!
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
In 2019, the Jacaranda FM Good Morning Angels family came together to help mend the hearts of 67 children waiting for treatment at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
Since then, our world has seen unknown hardship. Our health care system is bearing the brunt and our children need us more than ever before.
This Mandela Day, you can help. We are calling all the Angels to come together again, to support the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital make good on their promise to never turn a sick child away.
You can be an Angel by simply clicking on the donate button. All contributions will help heal a child - it’s in our hands.

BACKGROUND: The health care system in our country – private and state alike - is buckling under the pressure brought on by the third wave of COVID-19. Many families simply do not have the funds for treatment of their children and there is not enough space in state hospitals. To compound the crisis in Gauteng, a fire at Johannesburg’s Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in April, put even more pressure on surrounding hospitals – one of these being the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. Amid the fire chaos, in a few hours, some 100 ill, vulnerable children were transferred from Charlotte Maxeke to the neighbouring Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. These children are from families who cannot afford medical aid or private treatment and they had nowhere else to go.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is the realisation of Madiba’s dream of top-class treatment for “our most precious asset - our children”. The hospital is privately funded, but is also a referral hospital for state patients, who cannot be assisted by the state. This means the hospital needs to find funds for the treatment of these vulnerable members of our society and amid the current pressure - they need our help. The cost of treatment per child is on average R30 000. Our aim is to help them with the funds to treat as many children as possible.
We are calling all the Angels to come together again, to support the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital make good on their promise to never turn a sick child away.
