South African criminals are constantly evolving their methods, and a new approach known as "The Fishing Method" has emerged in Nelspruit.

Fidelity ADT has warned that criminals are using rods or poles to steal valuables like laptops and phones through open windows.

According to BusinessTech, this alarming technique has already been reported in three incidents over the past two weeks.

With summer temperatures rising, many homeowners leave their windows open, unknowingly making themselves easy targets.

Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT, explained how criminals take advantage of this.

"Criminals simply extend a pole through an open window to hook valuables placed on tables or desks near the opening, snatching them without even stepping inside the home."

While currently reported in Nelspruit, such methods tend to spread quickly, raising concerns for homeowners nationwide.

Despite year-on-year declines, home burglaries in South Africa remain high.

Between July and September 2024, police data recorded 34,631 home burglaries – an average of 385 per day.

House robberies, where criminals confront residents directly, are less common but still troubling, with 5,967 cases recorded in the same period.

Fidelity ADT has urged homeowners to strengthen their security to combat these threats.

Hattingh emphasised the importance of security and access control.

"We urge all homeowners to consider installing outdoor detection devices and perimeter security to reduce the chances of criminals reaching your property and gaining access to your home. It needs to be seen as an investment not only in your assets but in your family too."

Hattingh also warned about a concerning new trend, particularly in Centurion.

According to Pretoria Rekord, there has been a troubling increase in the theft of outdoor detection beams and gate motors.

Hattingh said the most affected areas include Waterkloof Glen, Centurion, the Moot, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

"These criminals strike at random times. They know that many homeowners do not activate their outdoor beams when they are home. This makes them easy pickings," she said.

She once again emphasised the importance of perimeter security.

"It is also a good idea to test your alarms and panic buttons to make sure all are in good working order," she added.
