New WhatsApp feature will make your life much easier
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
A new WhatsApp update has introduced a major change to the app's voice notes feature.

What do you do when you receive a voice message but you're on the move or in a loud place, unable to listen?
Well, WhatsApp's latest feature has the perfect solution for that—introducing voice message transcripts.

With this new feature, which was rolled out in November 2024 and is now also available for South Africans, voice messages can be transcribed into text.

This allows voice messages to be converted into readable text, making it easier to follow conversations no matter what you're doing.
Transcriptions are processed directly on your device, ensuring that no one—including WhatsApp—can access your messages.
To enable this feature, navigate to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, where you can turn transcriptions on or off.
Once you select the voice message transcripts toggle, you'll also be able to choose your preferred language.

Unfortunately for Afrikaans speakers, this language is not yet supported.
To transcribe a voice message, simply long-press it and tap 'Transcribe'.
