For many, cheating is a dealbreaker when it comes to a relationship, with many believing it is one of the worst things you can do. 

Unfortunately, cheating is much more common than people think.

According to a survey conducted by online dating advice platform DatingAdvice.com of 1,000 respondents, 83% have been involved in a cheating relationship.

93% of those who confirmed to have been in a cheating relationship were Gen Z, compared to 80% for millennials. 

The survey also revealed the most common ways people get caught when they cheat.

Here are the nine most common ways cheaters get caught:

9. Credit Card Statements (Looking for unusual expenses)

8. Personal Admission (Partner confessed voluntarily)

7. Told by "the other person" (informed by the partner’s accomplice)

Here are some other key takeaways from the survey: 

  • 23% of cheaters are discovered when partners snoop through phones and find incriminating texts and DMs, making it the highest method of discovery in our survey. 
  • Unusual credit card statements, such as hotel charges, expose 16% of men and 10% of women.
  • More women are found cheating on dating apps than men. 
  • 34% of millennials confront their partners about cheating suspicions, while 22% of Gen Z individuals do the same. 
  • Gen Z has a higher rate of catching partners cheating on dating apps, with a 19% catch rate compared to 14% for millennials.
  • 26% of millennials voluntarily confess to affairs, compared to 18% of younger individuals.
  • Nearly 20% of Gen Z cheaters are caught in the act due to carelessness.
