Absolute chaos broke out on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit when maggots reportedly started raining onto passengers from an overhead compartment.

According to Sky News, the Delta flight was forced to make a U-turn after just an hour into the nine-hour trip.

Passengers at the back of the plane reported the incident as "absolutely gross" after maggots fell from the compartment.

Sky News reports that it was later discovered that the larvae came from rotten fish in the plane.

One passenger recalled looking behind her and seeing the larvae "wiggling around on the seat".

"My family and I were in the row directly in front of the maggots," said one passenger, who goes by Nisha_16 on the forum Reddit.

"The lady right behind us told the flight attendants the maggots were falling on her head. I turned around and they were wiggling around on the seat... Absolutely gross."

According to Sky News, another passenger, Kelsey, described her experience in a post on X.

In her post, she recalls complaining about an "absolutely odd odour," to which the flight attendant did not respond.

Delta confirmed the incident on its website, saying rotten fish and maggots were in a bag.
