Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
We all know the famous line, "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby", but do you know who Ruby actually is? Here is the answer...
In case you didn't know, Kaiser Chiefs' famous song 'Ruby' was never about a woman.
Former drummer and songwriter for the band, Nick Hodgson, revealed the real inspiration behind the hit song 'Ruby' in a TikTok video released in 2022.

To this day, not many people knew about the true meaning, until the video recently resurfaced.
So, who is Ruby really?
During a recently shared video, Hodgson retells a live audience about the inspiration behind the song, revealing that Ruby was actually a black Labrador.
He recalled playing a verse on the keyboard when someone called Ruby walked in, prompting him to sing, "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby…"
"At the time, we didn't say who Ruby was," he shared. "But I can tell you now that Ruby was a dog."

In a self-made TikTok video, in which the English drummer and songwriter played a stripped-back version of 'Ruby' on a piano, he revealed more information about Ruby.
@nickjdhodgson This is the piano that i started writing Ruby on. Look out for the original #Ruby. Ricky went onto write the verse lyrics. #indie #alt #alttiktok #altmusic #indietiktok #noughtiesmusic #kaiserchiefs #songwriter #songwriterstories #piano #songwriting ♬ original sound - Nick J.D. A text box on the video read, "Ruby was our family dog", alongside a picture of a black Labrador, adding: "When I was writing it Ruby (the dog) walked in and I sang."
He then played the chorus and concluded with the text: "I'm very glad she did."
