Safe and picturesque hiking trails in Gauteng
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
With safety being key to a family outing, we have the perfect hiking trials for you and your family!
Are you yearning to get out of the house but don’t know what to do and where to go?
Is the travel ban getting you down?
Big Red Barn, Irene
Martin Bester loves taking his dogs on a walk, especially when nature is as beautiful as The Big Red Barn.
The Big Red Barn is a wonder-filled space where all kinds of Big Red Fun things can happen. Our Barn is an antique hay barn which we salvaged and rebuilt on Sunlawns Estate, a 200-hectare farm just 15 minutes from Centurion. The Big Red Barn is next to a 20-acre Eucalyptus forest, and looks out over an expansive vista of fields, grasslands and the Kaal River.
Look for The Big Red Barn on the M18, just 6 minutes south of Irene Village, and 15 minutes from Centurion, the R21 & the N1.
CRADLE MOON LAKESIDE GAME LODGE
Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge offers multiple activities to enjoy the indigenous surroundings.
For the more active crowds they have over 50km of cycling and running trails, including single track, hand-built bridges, banked corners and much more!
The trails are open 8am to 5 pm on weekdays and 7 am to 5 pm on weekends. No bookings are required. The restaurant at the lodge sells burgers and pizzas for takeaways.
RUSTIG FARM
This family-run farm close to Hekpoortis on the southern slope of the Magaliesberg and falls just inside the Gauteng border. It's a 45-minute drive from both Joburg and Pretoria.
Enjoy the magnificent views from the Magaliesburg mountains and enjoy a family outing, hike or braai in the wilderness.
The farm has five hiking trails: 3km, 5km, 9km, 13km and 18km. The latter is an overnight hike that very few people do as a day hike (except trail runners).
WINDY BROW NATURE RESERVE
Just outside Cullinan, this is a 30-minute drive from Pretoria and an hour's drive from Joburg.
Windy Brow Adventures have 3 trails to choose from. Each route was designed for the hiker/trail runner to enjoy a different aspect of the reserve. The routes start and end the same location, and can be combined to form a longer trail. Adult day pass entry fee is R40 and children R25.
Hennops Hiking Trials
Just off the R511 en route to Hartbeespoort, about 45 minutes from Johannesburg, you will find these picturesque trials.
There are a few trails to choose from, starting at 1,5km until 10km.
