"So, here I am. I'm gay" - South African actor

The actor received hundreds of messages of support over the weekend.

Armand Aucamp stole thousands of people's hearts in 'Die Boekklub' when he played the role of the heartbreaker and writer, Tom.

He has played enough roles, such as Jan van Riebeeck in the movie Krotoa, Ballade vir 'n Enkeling, that South Africans will immediately recognise him.

He has been wanting to get something off his chest for a long time and shared it with award-winning writer Hanlie Retief.

"For the first 24 years I couldn't stand in my own shoes. I walked around with something I couldn't even call myself. I'm gay," Aucamp admitted.

The ‘mountain’ that I had accepted as a part of my anatomy for all those years, came crumbling down. For the first time in my life, I felt light. I vowed to never be anything but honest about it. But, with every success, every project, every interview and shoot over the past 7 years, that mountain came crawling back…Slowly, and unnoticed, those rocks made their way up my back and, at age 32, it had found its familiar foundations, square on my shoulders, once again.
