Actor Johnny Depp has been awarded $10-million (around R157-million) in compensatory damages, as well as $5-million (around R78-million) in punitive damages. The $5-million has been reduced to $350,000 as per Virginia State Law.
The jury found that most of Heard's statements made against Depp were false and indeed defamatory.
"Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people, who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed," Depp said in his statement. "The jury gave me my life back."

Amber Heard has, however, been awarded $2-million in compensatory damages as the jury found that Depp’s attorney made "false and disparaging statements about Heard."
"The disappointment I feel today is beyond words," Heard said in a statement. "I'm heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband."

Compensatory damages are intended to compensate the injured party for loss or injury. Punitive damages are awarded to punish a wrongdoer.
At this point, it is still unclear whether Amber Heard will appeal the outcome of the trial.
According to BBC News, unless new evidence or testimonies emerge after the verdict of "this blockbuster six-week courtroom drama, little will change from today's outcome."
