Upon her arrival, the 27-year-old was greeted by eager fans and the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie.

One fan, however, demanded the spotlight with her unique interaction with the Olympic swimmer.

In a video clip posted by IOL Sport, Smith can be seen posing with her gold medal for a picture along with a female fan, who is holding a R100 note.

After the picture was taken, the fan proceeded to give Smith the R100.

"Buy chocolate for you. I love you. You are beautiful. I wish I could give you more," said the woman.

Coming into the 2024 Games, Team SA was looking to improve on the three medals received at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - and improve they did.

In Tokyo, South Africa claimed three medals, with gold and silver from Tatjana Smith (Schoenmaker) and silver from Bianca Buitendag.

In 2024, Team South Africa managed to double that, bringing home six Olympic medals.
