According to Sowetan Live, another Rea Vaya driver was also shot and killed in Protea Glen when he stopped at a traffic light along Wild Chestnut Street.

Jacaranda FM News reported that Rea Vaya bus operations will not be resumed on Wednesday following the incidents.

Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene told SABC News that the Johannesburg metro police have drawn up a plan to ensure drivers' safety.

"JMPD has committed to putting together a plan today (Tuesday) so that they can escort the buses and go to strategic BRT stations. But this is a declaration of war against the residents of Soweto, against the government of local unity, and against provincial and national government.

"This is a serious declaration of war, and we must respond in the same way as the government to what has happened here."
