A fake speed camera, made from a tripod, an empty wine box, and a beer can, had motorists taking a second look as they passed by.

Every year during the festive season, motorists are reminded of the dangers and potential consequences of travelling on busy roads.

In South Africa, awareness of these risks has grown so much that some people are now taking matters into their own hands.

A humorous video of a fake speed camera set up next to a busy road in Struisbaai has left social media users in stitches.

The makeshift device, which from a distance looked like a legitimate speed camera, prompted many motorists to obey the speed limit.

In a video shared on Facebook, a motorist is seen approaching the fake speed camera, laughing uncontrollably, only to reveal that the seemingly real device was nothing more than a cleverly disguised prop.

According to Netwerk24, the local Cape Agulhas Municipality has confirmed it is aware of the video circulating on social media. The municipality clarified that the so-called speed camera was not installed by its officials and is not part of any official law enforcement measures.

"We want to assure the public that our official speed cameras are clearly marked, easily identifiable, and installed in accordance with relevant traffic laws and regulations. We take the safety of our residents and visitors very seriously, and our law enforcement measures are in place to promote responsible driving habits and prevent accidents," said Krishen Moodley, Director of Local Management Services.

While the municipality appreciates residents' interest in road safety – however creative or unconventional – it reminded the public that fake speed cameras are not an effective way to promote road safety. On the contrary, they can confuse or distract drivers.

Kennith Patrick, the municipality’s Acting Manager for Protective Services, took the opportunity to once again urge motorists to adhere to speed limits, obey traffic laws and regulations, and remain vigilant on all roads.
