Prison should be one of the worst situations anyone would want to find themselves in, but is that true for South African prisons?

A video that has been circulating on social media shows an alleged prisoner in South Africa bragging about the good life he has in prison.

In the video, the inmate claimed that he has access to free food, electricity, education, and the ability to use a cellphone to post on social media.

Many social media users were left outraged by the conditions and privileges afforded to prisoners in South Africa.

"Hello, haters, you put us in prison, and you think we are suffering? No, my brother, we are doing extremely fine. Look how happy we are," the man can be heard saying while other prisoners agreed.

Watch here:

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo told The Citizen that the department was appalled by the video.

"The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is appalled by the video making rounds on social media by inmate Bornface Banks," said Nxumalo.

According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Banks' claims were false as prisoners are not allowed to possess cellphones or any other contraband devices.

However, they did confess that despite the regulations, inmates often get their hands on cellphones, often through corruption or smuggling.

Nxumalo added that the cellphone has been confiscated since the video's release.

"The remand detainee will be taken through disciplinary processes."

"Mobile phones are defined as contraband in correctional centres; hence, illegal access and usage is a punishable offence," he said.

According to The Citizen, the inmate is a Zimbabwean national who is currently being held at Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town for alleged kidnapping.
