President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on Wednesday night follows a meeting earlier this week of the National Coronavirus Command Council and another with Cabinet.
It was the first time he has addressed South Africans on the pandemic since mid-September when his government announced a move to level 1 of the lockdown.
With adjustments to the alert Level 1, President Ramaphosa touched on Gender-based violence (GBV) and suggested a few days of mourning.
President Ramaphosa announced five days of mourning for the victims of COVID-19 as well as GBV victims between 25 – 29 November.
Martin Bester, however, had something to say the morning after the President’s national address.
“The five days of mourning made me angry. It made me angry that he threw GBV in with the coronavirus in five days.
“To say that we’re going to mourn (GBV) with something else is disrespectful.
“It’s almost like he pushed it in the last minute!”
