This is what South Africa’s new R5 coin looks like
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The new coin will feature some of South Africa’s previous iconic coin designs.
On Wednesday, 30 June, a new R5 coin will be released into circulation by South Africa’s central bank, to mark the South African Reserve Bank’s 100-year history.
The bank has a significant history, and it dates back to the iconic “Tickey”. There will even be a new 10 cent coin released in 2022.

The coin was gazetted by government on 27 November 2020. The commemorative R5 coin will circulate alongside the existing coins, and its value will remain the same as the existing R5 coin in circulation. The existing R5 coins in circulation will remain legal tender and will continue to be issued.
The South African Reserve Bank says: “We remain committed to our constitutional mandate, ‘to achieve and maintain price stability in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth.’ This mandate was crafted with the intent to rebuild and contribute meaningfully to the lives of all South Africans. May the SARB have another 100 years of service to the people of South Africa.”
Are you a coin collector? There will also be a collector’s R5 gold-plated sterling silver coin to add to your collection!
Previous coins were designed by various young artists. The R5 coin was designed by Laura Windvogel or better known as Lady Skollie.
