South African wanderlust lovers on the hunt for their next adventure gather here.
Mozambique is a must-visit destination if you are chasing the sun, turquoise beaches and bold food flavours.
The best part? Travel between South Africa and Mozambique is easy and affordable.
Here's everything you need to know about travelling to Mozambique.
Do you need a visa?
The good news for South Africans visiting Mozambique is that you don't need a visa to enter the country. This applies for stays of up to 30 days. However, you do need a passport that is valid for at least six months.
*Note: It is always best to check the visa requirements of the country you are visiting before booking your flights and accommodation, in case there are updates.
Best Ways to Travel to Mozambique
There are various ways to travel to Mozambique from South Africa. The best option is by plane, for convenience and time. If you're travelling from Johannesburg to Maputo, which is one of the major cities in Moz, a flight between the two cities is around one hour and 10 minutes.
Flight prices depend on when and where you depart from SA, but a return ticket from JHB to Maputo could cost as little as R3,000 or less if you're lucky.
You can also take a bus or taxi to Mozambique, which would be much cheaper, but it will take you at least six hours. If you choose to drive yourself, be aware that you might require extra paperwork and insurance.
Once you arrive, you can use apps like Yango, which works like Uber, to get around.
Mozambique South Africa exchange rate
Mozambique uses the Metical (MZN) as its currency. At the time of writing this story, one Rand would get you 3.46 Meticals. Currency exchange kiosks are located at OR Tambo and major airports in Mozambique.
Places like the beach town of Ponta do Ouro accept ZAR payments, however, you are likely to receive your change in Meticals. Do some research on the area you are visiting to find what works best for you.
While major cards like Visa and Mastercard work in many areas, your cards might not work in others so be prepared to pay cash.
*Note: Remember to alert your bank that you will be out of the country to ensure you don't have any problems using your debit or credit cards when you reach your destination.
Mozambique and South Africa time difference
There is no time difference between Mozambique and South Africa, which means you don't have to worry about jet lag.
Best Places to Visit in Mozambique
Mozambique is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. It is known for its breathtaking beaches, beautiful marine life, mouthwatering seafood and rich culture.
Here's a list of some places you should consider visiting on your next trip:
- Ponta do Ouro
- Praia do Tofo
- Bazaruto Archipelago
- Tofo Beach
- Gorongosa National Park

What language do they speak in Mozambique?
Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique, but other mother tongues such as Changana, Makhuwa, Ndau, Sena, Chwabo, Tswa and Nyanja are also spoken.
Note what language is mainly spoken in the area you are visiting, and learn a few phrases like "hello", "good morning", "thank you", "please" and "yes/no".
It is also a good idea to learn how to ask questions like:
- How much does this cost?
- Where can I find a toilet?
- Where can I get a taxi?
- Do you speak English?
In cases of emergency, it is also best to learn how to ask for a doctor or call for an ambulance.
Don't stress too much, as basic English is usually spoken at most tourist hotspots.
Speaking of communication, you should also consider buying a local SIM card for connectivity. You can buy these at the airport or mobile network stores.
