2022 in review: On a lighter note...

It’s safe to say that 2022 was intense for most South Africans, but amid the barrage of hard news, politics, crime, and corruption, The Drive with Rob and Roz takes a look at the lighter moments that helped us to laugh at ourselves…

Zulu King’s coronation

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini Zulu’s ascension to the throne enthralled people across the world.

The succession was a contentious one, marked by court battles, but once the King entered the kraal, the world was captivated by the pomp and ceremony of the Zulu people.

The King was formally enthroned as the head of South Africa's most influential traditional monarchy at a colourful official ceremony and vowed to promote peace during this reign .

However, South Africans were possibly more enthralled by a lone white woman who desperately wants to be his wife. The Zulu culture allows the King to marry multiple women, so who knows, she might get her wish yet.

The Queen is dead, long live the King

The Zulu coronation came at roughly the same time as the British royal family saw major developments – Queen Elizabeth the second, the longest-serving monarch in British history, died, paving the way for her son, Charles, to become king.

South Africans were generally fascinated by the developments – and even had to learn what the official title for the king’s wife, Camilla would be – but there were those saying they wish the royal family only the worst (yes, we are referring to the EFF).

King Charles’ enthronement will only take place in 2023, but South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa was the first head of state to visit him in London as part of an official State Visit - and the King made a remarkable effort to speak several South African languages during the pomp-filled occasion.

Speaking of South African languages...

Actress Charlize Theron sparked controversy among South Africans after she made claims about the Afrikaans language.

"There's about 44 people still speaking it. It's definitely a dying language; it's not a very helpful language," she said in the interview.

The Drive with Rob and Roz took this as personally as all 43 of the other Afrikaans-speaking South Africans did, but managed to get some perspective on the fact that there are, actually, millions of people speaking Afrikaans.

Chess cheating

While 2020 was generally a hard year, with South Africans officially not very happy at all, stories like the international chess cheating scandal at least had some buzzing….

Chess player Hans Niemann has become embroiled in a cheating controversy that required cautious explaining and an adult content disclaimer.
