'60% of divorces are due to finances': Wouter Snyman
Updated | By The Drive with Rob & Roz
The Drive with Rob and Roz recently spoke to South African entrepreneur Wouter Snyman about the impact financial well-being can have on mental health and practical tips on managing finances.
November marks Men's Mental Health Month, and Jacaranda FM is creating a Safe Space to assist men on their mental health journey.
The Drive with Rob and Rob recently spoke to the founder and CEO of the attooh! Group of Companies, Wouter Snyman, to shed light on the impact financial stress can have on mental health.
The conversation began by addressing the psychological impact of financial stress, which can often manifest as anxiety and depression.
Snyman emphasised that money, or a lack thereof, is a major driver of relationship troubles.
He notes that "60% of divorces in South Africa are due to financial issues," stressing the fundamental role that financial stability plays in mental health.
Culturally and societally, traditional perceptions of men as financial providers adds pressure, especially in today's fluctuating economy.

According to Snyman, education emerged as a critical factor in financial management.
Many are not taught how to handle their finances adequately, either in school or at home.
Snyman described the importance of learning from others, sharing that "having a buddy or someone to talk to" can be pivotal.
Resilience in the face of financial failure is of utmost importance.
Snyman, a seasoned entrepreneur with over 33 years of experience in finance and business, admitted that setbacks often teach more than successes.
His perspective, "In actual fact failure is essential for life," encourages individuals to view financial setbacks as learning opportunities.

For practical advice, Snyman recommends individuals start by understanding their income and expenses.
Having open conversations about finances, which are often stigmatised, helps demystify financial management, turning it into an approachable skill.
As a special offer, Wouter Snyman generously provided listeners with a free PDF copy of his book, ‘The Ordinary Millionaire’, which expands on these themes, offering practical guidance to achieve financial independence.

This discussion serves as a reminder that while the journey to financial well-being can be challenging, it is eminently possible with the right mindset, support, and education.
