LISTEN: Capetonians help Two Oceans Aquarium save 80 baby sea turtles!
Updated | By The Drive with Rob and Roz
Recent extreme weather conditions across South Africa have also affected the local wildlife in a serious way.
South Africa is lucky enough to be home to five out of seven sea turtle species but unfortunately those that do occur in these waters appear on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Humans tend to think that the creatures, plants and other living things in the ocean waters will remain untouched by what happens on land.
This is not the case.
After serious weather conditions across SA but especially in the Western Cape, a record number of baby sea turtles were found washed up on shores.
The Two Oceans Aquarium reached out to volunteers and locals on social media for help and the response was immense.
They might not need any more ice cream tubs but they still have important information to share.
The Drive team got in touch with Vehan Landman from the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre to find out why so many turtles ended up on the beaches instead of the water where they belong, and what you should NOT do when you come across one.
