According to this report, there have been 19,729 murders in South Africa during 2024.
The South African Police Service has flagged this as its deadliest quarter.
Their latest report covers the three months between July and September 2024, and during this period, 6,545 murders were reported.

This is higher than Q1 (April to June 2024) which had 6,198 murders and Q4 of the previous year (January to March 2024) with 6,536.
So far, 2024 has been less deadly than 2023 during the same period.
These statistics, however, still reflect the deadliest period of the year, with October to December historically being the most violent period.
Arguments, misunderstandings, road rage and other provocations remain the biggest underlying cause of murders in the country, with public spaces being the most common crime scenes.- BusinessTech

Which provinces are the deadliest?
Given the large amount of people who live in Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape, it is to be expected that the most populous provinces still account for the most murders.
When looking at murder rates per 100,000 people, the province with the highest rate is the Eastern Cape at 19.8.
The Western Cape is sitting at 14.2, and KZN is at 12.1. All three provinces are above the national average.
Most provinces have maintained their position on the overall ranking, with only the North-West Province moving above Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape in the same quarter last year.
