When you think about health, your mind probably immediately jumps to weight, mental well-being, or common issues like headaches and tummy aches. But what about your teeth and gums?

If nothing feels wrong, a dentist visit might not be a priority – but preventative care is essential. After all, no one wants to deal with tooth pain or difficulty eating.

And while it may seem like common sense, a little reminder never hurts – your oral health deserves just as much attention as the rest of your well-being.

Here are some expert-backed tips to keep your teeth in top shape in 2025:

1. A simple dental routine

Dr Samantha Naidoo, a dental and aesthetics surgeon based in Richards Bay, says dental care shouldn't be a complicated routine. In fact, the simpler, the better.

Be sure to brush twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and quality toothpaste. Always aim for at least two minutes, as brushing in a rush can increase the risk of gum disease, plaque build-up, and tooth decay over time. Floss when you can.

Dr Naidoo also emphasises that preventative care is better than a cure, and no TikTok advice can replace actually seeing your dentist.

2. Avoid tooth-staining food

Teeth-whitening treatments that work can be effective but expensive, and aren't permanent solutions.

That's why you must also consider what you put into your mouth.

The Hartley Clinic recommends limiting the consumption of coffee, tea, wine, chocolate and dark berries. To help avoid stains, rinse your mouth with water after consumption and use a straw for cold beverages.

3. Get the right brush

According to Dr Naidoo, using the wrong toothbrush is one of the most common and significant dental care mistakes.

Brushes with very hard bristles can lead to enamel abrasion, compromising tooth health.

4. Set an example for your children

Kids tend to do as they see, so by practising good dental hygiene at home, you can encourage lifelong healthy habits in your children.

Don't threaten children with a visit to the dentist – this will only instil fear.

5. Kick bad habits

Smoking, chewing tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption can have serious effects on your oral health.

In the long term, these habits can lead to cancers, tooth loss and gum disease.

6. Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water helps maintain a healthy smile. Staying hydrated keeps your mouth moist, which helps wash away bacteria and food particles that cause bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay.

Water also promotes saliva production, a natural defence against harmful acids that erode tooth enamel.

Lastly, fluoridated water strengthens teeth and protects cavities.
