Here are the top five African countries that spend the most time on social media, but where does South Africa rank on the list?

Social media has permanently transformed how people communicate and interact.

Once used solely to share moments of our daily lives and connect with friends and family, social media platforms have become a global industry, widely utilised for marketing and various ways of making money.

According to Business Insider Africa, over five-billion people use social media worldwide, with the average user spending about 2.5 hours per day on these platforms.

With so many people using social media, it's no wonder that humanity has found ways to monetise it.

A recent report analysed by Visual Capitalist surveyed social media usage across six different regions worldwide among people aged 16 to 64.

The regions included Africa, South America, Asia, Europe, and one country each from the Middle East and North America.

The report revealed that two African countries, South Africa and Kenya, ranked among the top in terms of time spent on social media.

Here are the top five African countries that spend the most time on social media:

Kenya led in Africa, with an average daily time of 3 hours and 43 minutes.

Other African countries with significant social media engagement include South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana.

In South America, Brazil stands out with the highest average time spent on social media, clocking in at 3 hours and 34 minutes per day.

Across Asia, the Philippines ranks first with an average social media usage time of 3 hours and 33 minutes. 

In Europe, Bulgaria leads with 2 hours and 26 minutes per day, while Saudi Arabia and Mexico top their respective regions—the Middle East and North America—with averages of 3 hours and 10 minutes and 3 hours and 4 minutes, respectively.
