Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has made it very clear that this matter is non-negotiable.
According to News24, every car owner in the province will have to re-register and receive a new registration number that cannot be removed or copied and is reliable.
The decision to implement the new system came after Gauteng ran out of new numbers and letters to assign vehicles and the new number plates will seemingly be tamper-proof as well.

The main aim of the new number plates will be to help combat crime.
The problem of crime in this country, and in this province, is that the motor vehicle is the common denominator. The Tracker Vehicle Crime Index (VCI) also indicates that Gauteng experiences 61% of total vehicle crime incidents, which is the highest volume in all the provinces.
KwaZulu-Natal is second with 14% and the Western Cape with a mere 9%.
