Parks are usually big, open spaces with trees, maybe a few benches, wildlife and a children's play area.

When you think of a park, relaxing under a tree, having a picnic or running around probably comes to mind.

But what does the world's smallest park look like?

The teeny tiny plot in Nagaizumi Town, Japan, recently took the title from Portland's Mill Ends Park and is now officially recognised as the World's Smallest Park.

You might be surprised to find out that the park, which is only 0,23 square metres, has a bench, some stones and, of course, luscious grass.

Not sure how big 0,23 square metres is? It's about two A3 sheets of paper.

The tiny park in Nagaizumi Town was completed in 1988 and was long considered the world's smallest, but it has now officially received the recognition it deserves.

As mentioned, Portland’s Mill Ends Park previously held the title of world's smallest park, which inspired a construction management worker in Nagaizumi Town to create its worthy rival.

According to Mental Floss, the worker wanted to cover some unused space on the road and build a park smaller than Mill Ends.

Town officials had a professional surveyor measure the piece of land and ensure that it followed Guinness World Record guidelines before it was awarded its title.

If you find yourself in Japan, the park is only an hours travel from Tokyo.
