Walking provides many of the same benefits for humans as it does for dogs.
When on a walk, dogs receive mental stimulation and socialisation, as well as physical exercise, and humans also get enough physical activity, which improves their overall health.
Research has shown that people also enjoy walking their dogs, and walking them acts as a stress reliever.

Unfortunately, in 2024, people aren't paying as much attention when out with their pets. Instead, you might be listening to a podcast, scrolling on Instagram or multitasking in another way.
While this might seem harmless, it could be dangerous and influence your relationship with your dog.
Animal experts have compared it to "distracted driving" as you could also easily wind up in a dangerous situation.
Dr Katherine A. Houpt, a professor emerita of behavioural medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, has provided more insight into why it's so important to be present when you and your dog go for a walk.

Running into triggers or risky situations
When you are out with your dog, their safety should be paramount.
Most dogs want to sniff around and say hi to other people and dogs when on a walk.

It only takes a second for your dog to swallow a sharp chicken bone or get into a scrap with another dog. They might also ingest something poisonous such as chocolate, sweets containing xylitol or drugs.

Even if you are listening to a podcast or music, you could miss important auditory clues like a vehicle honking or another dog growling.

Being aware of your surroundings means you can distract your dog before they see something that might set them off or go to chow on something they shouldn't.
This also enforces basic training.
Being present strengthens your bond with your dog
There is something so special about the bond between a dog and their human.
If you have a pet, you likely want to have the best possible relationship with them because they mean the world to you.

Data has shown that dog walks can reduce negative emotions and boost emotional wellness. The opportunities it creates for interaction and bonding also decrease loneliness.
Exploring the world with your dog helps you better understand their wants and needs in various situations; you see more of their personality and learn more about their likes and dislikes.
All these factors help bring you and your pet closer, making everything more rewarding.
When owners walk their dog, the hope would be that it is a time that they can spend one-on-one with their dog, enjoying their company with one another.- Dr Melissa Bain (Professor of clinical animal behavior science)
Next time you head out the door with your furry friend, try to be a little more present and leave the podcasts and scrolling for the couch.
