Iconic Prince shirt set to sell for R1.1 million
The music legend's famous 'Purple Rain' shirt is heading to auction.
Prince Rogers Nelson, widely known as Prince, passed away in April 2016, leaving an unforgettable mark on the music and entertainment world.

His career was nothing short of extraordinary, spanning decades and influencing countless artists across genres. Nearly a decade after his passing, Prince's legacy endures, with his timeless hits continuing to resonate with audiences worldwide.
'Purple Rain', his most popular song, still connects with people of all generations.
This month, a piece of music and entertainment history is set to go up for auction.

'Purple Rain' isn’t just one of Prince’s biggest hits – it was also the title of the film that starred him in the lead role. The movie tells the compelling story of "a young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, who must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his dissatisfied band as his star begins to rise."

The film features several songs from the album of the same name, which spent 24 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. The album remains one of the best-selling of all time and is still hailed as a classic.
Beyond the unforgettable musical performances, one of the most memorable elements of the film is Prince's standout outfit, which features a white ruffled shirt.

Now, collectors and fans alike have the chance to own the very shirt won by the singer himself in the film.
Bonhams will auction off the shirt, with bids starting at $60,000 (about R1,1 million).
Warner Bros., 1984, White silk shirt, gathered high-neck collar, three layers of ruffles to the front, long sleeves, ruffled faux French cuffs, faux pearl buttons down the front, shoulder pads, with Prince purple/white label sewn to the inside neck, with letter of authenticity, and letter of provenance from Juanita Escovedo stating that the shirt was made for Prince during the making of Purple Rain, and was given by Prince to Sheila E.
The auction runs from January 13, 2025, until January 22.
