The internet is on fire with reports of a possible merger between the United Rugby Championship (URC) and Premiership Rugby.

Premiership Rugby is "an English rugby union competition that was founded in 1987. 13 clubs compete in Premiership Rugby across 24 matches each, with each team playing all the others once at home and once away."

According to The Telegraph, the merger is looking to unite clubs across the UK and Ireland.

Currently, the URC consists of teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, and South Africa, but sources say that a board meeting took place on September 12th in which the Premiership clubs spoke favourably about the possibility of the merger.

This plan was one of several that was put forward, and it would exclude the Italian and South African teams from the championship.

It was reported that other plans include an Anglo-Welsh league and assessing the impact of reducing Premiership Rugby to only eight teams instead of 10 or increasing it to 12, 14, or 16.

The Telegraph further states that the British and Irish league was most interested because it was deemed to potentially have the most commercial value.
